La Casita Azul
(2025) acrylic on wood panel, 12×12 in.
This painting shows a house in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico, where the artist’s grandmother once lived. It was also the first place her mother brought her as a newborn. The image is based on a photo the artist took during a recent visit to the island. She has seen the house many times throughout her life. It sits across from her titi’s home, where the family still gathers.
Though she has no clear memory of being inside, the house feels deeply familiar. It lives in her mind as part of the Puerto Rican landscape, not just physical, but emotional and symbolic. The work speaks to the diasporic experience: knowing a place is part of you, even when the memories are blurred or fragmented. The artist explores the melancholy of passing time - the space between belonging and distance, memory and imagination, home and homeland.
