Mancha de Plátano
(2022) acrylic on canvas, 48 x 48 in.
The forms of the artist’s body are camouflaged in this self-portrait and are intertwined with the large leaves of a plantain tree. “Mancha de plátano” translates literally to “the stain of the plantain", a notoriously difficult mark to remove. This phrase is used by Puerto Ricans to reference the great source of pride found in the permanent mark of their heritage.
